Indian gooseberry, also known as amla, has a distinctive and intense flavor profile, primarily described as sour, bitter, and astringent. While sourness is the most dominant characteristic, there are also notes of bitterness and a slightly astringent, drying sensation. Additionally, some describe a sweet aftertaste.
Amla are small, round berries with light-green skin. The skin is almost translucent, with 6 to 8 faint yellow striations, making the Amla appear to be segmented. The skin is tough, yet thin with a flesh that is crisp and juicy with a taste both sour and bitter. The flesh of an Amla is also somewhat astringent.
Indian Gooseberry is frozen whole to retain its high vitamin C content and tart flavour. A traditional superfood, amla is used in chutneys, murabbas, health tonics, and sabzis. Ingredients: Amla (Indian Gooseberry). Nutritional Info (per 100g): Energy 44 kcal, Fat 0.6g, Carbs 10g, Protein 1g.
